Hi michael ! I wont write a long reply 'coz I have a broken wrist (ha...snowboard !)
It took me almost a week to try it on real floor. I first did it spotted on a trampoline (yeah, I was really scared), after understanding and feeling the motion, I tryed it off a kindda pyramid, landing on crash matts. That's the way I did it, maybe not the best but I liked it cause when I was comfortable at a certain height, I was taking off a part of the pyramid, doing backflip from closer to the floor.
I worked my way up like this and builded my confidence enough to try it on a soft floor (not spotted). I landed it on the knees first, and did it again. After three tries Iwas landing on my feet but putting my hand in front of me, to protect my face in case.
Now I don't put my hands anymore but my backs are not perfect, far from it lol. Need to practice some more, until I'm better at it.
You will notice that at the beginning, if you're not stretching well, your abs will suffer, keeping you tuck is a big job.
I hope I answer your question

You cannot really prevent this from happening at the beginning as your stomach muscles are being used in a way that they are not used to. The only way to get rid of it is to practise lots =) and even then they will still hurt if you do loads.... You can make them stornger my doing sit ups etc but practising back tucks is the best for them...also, t ease the pain try stretching them out before and afterwards by lying on your front and pushing up with your arms and down with your hips - like a seal =) hmm maybe you need to work on jumping up more...thro your arms up, jump up and push your hips out - only at the peak of your jump do you tuck and go backwards - or this is how i am trying them... Maybe you could try with two spotters if one is not enough?

i can't do a backflip yet but when i was learning a front flip i cud never flip all the way round it took me loads and loads of attempts. I thougth about giving up a couple of times. But i eventually landed it. Anyway the point i am trying to make is do not give up, keep trying and trying until u get it. practice makes perfect Adrena1ine

mike try tucking your legs closer to your body for faster rotation... you know how when your on a spinning desk chair and you spin around and you go slower with your legs straitened outwards than with them tucked close to your body.. same concept.
