I had this problem with monkeys. It may sound strange but if possible find a lowish rail next to some grass or even better bring along some padding. Do a monkey and deliberatly clip your feet, go straight into a roll out of it. When you know that you can go straight into a safe roll from the monkey your body will loose its fear and will not pump you with as much fear. As with all fears iits about exposing yourself to it as often as possible and having faith in your abilities. Hope that helps.

Just like SPike said one way to completley get over the fear of it is to feel the worst and know it doesnt hurt tht much.... In almost all cases you should have enough time to put out your hands, or role or least turn onto your side.. ANother tip might be to try them from standing rather than running up...you need more of a jump but it might take away a bit more fear =)=) start small as poss

ooh yeh...not reading things properly this morning =) lol.. if you are worried about not clearing the bar then maybe it might help to try jumping onto the bar and over to start with, so that your feet make contact to help convince yourself you can get over =)=)

bita technical advice lol., when you do a monkey vault, its not just about planting your hands on the rail and bringing your legs through, i find you need to really push off the bar with your arms so it gives more clearence for your legs to come through. also like scott said try jumping a lowish bar and simply plant your hands on for a split second, then develop it from there.. Just time and practice mate, give it your all and your be ok good luck with them, chase

heres my advice (i just copied this from another one of my posts elsewhere on the board)
maybe you could try it on a wall thats not too high and jump up so your feet land on the wall, not go over (this is called a monkey plant). This way if you feel the need to bail out at anytime you can jes lift your hands off. then, as you get more confident, try going though and lifting one hand off a little bit to give some room for error. its important to get enough upwards momentum when doing mokeys to get through, not having enough sets you up for some amusing, if not painful slams (you just wait till you start doing king kongs from gaps, i nearly lost my face to one of those ho-hum). yeah not meaning to freak you out. unless theres a 20ft drop the other side, theres not much risk involved in this tech, your reactions should be fast enough to sort yourself out should you catch a foot.

Just a couple of side comments for anyone looking over this thread:
I coach female pkers fairly frequently, now I don't know if this apply across the genders but ive noticed two main problems with monkey vaults.
(1) One footed take off, or no push in the jump....causes a loss in distance and often the traceur will end up monkey planting. The other result can be incorrect weight transferance...causing the legs to go to either the left or right side, leaving the monkey looking unclean.
(2)Position of the hands: if the hands are too far back then the distance required will not be achieved.
But more important than anything else, is trust in your ability. ;D

comments to flame- nice advice honey..hehe i helped my cousin to do a monkey vault, an he not being funny but very un co-ordinated, so i got him to go to a brick wall about 3 an half foot high an place his hands on the wall, then i said jump as if ur spiderman an put ur feet on the wall..i think this is called a monkey plant, then i said do that an get confident in doing that, then push with ur hands an arms, an try an make ur hands leave the wall just as ur feet are landing, then i got him to slowly move his feet closer to the edge of the wall where ur finger tips are pointing, then with doing that u will feel with abit more energy u can just move ur feet alittle more, an they will pass the wall, then u can start addin alittle jog to the wall, an its easy as pie from there...i hope this helps alittle, it worked for my cousin, but might not work for others, but see how u go goodluck peace..!! addz

I have reasonable flexibility but I have really long legs so even with all of the training I do, I cant get my legs in enough for them to go through my arms. What I do for Monkey vaults is to slightly push up wards with my hands as im going over. So I go into the move with my arms slightly bent and then just push up with my arms and push up with my knee's, doing that at the same time I can do monkeys no problem and they dont look any different from how other people do them, just my style I suppose. Anyway if any of that makes sense, give it a shot.
G-man.

Same here Graftin, long ass legs, lol. Pushing up can be important anyway because it helps with flow i think.

i used to be afraid of monkey vaults. but they are sooo easy! youre just scared cuz if your feet hit the rail you might crash badly. but the same is true for any kind of jumping over something. if your feet hit it youre f*cked. just try a monkey over something you could even jump over without using your hands. the easiest thing you ever did. Graftin & spike: i think nobody is still pushing the rail when their feet pass their hands, just not enough space not even if your back is absolutely parallel to the floor. (think about kneeing on a skateboard and pushing yourself on the floor - your hands will easily reach the floor under your shins but hardly to your feet). luckily its not necessary to push the rail until you are completely over it.

I still push the rail as i pass. Don't have problems with them just stating that i have long ass legs. I keep contact with the rail for as long as is possible to get as much distance as possible. Monkeys are easy, all about confidence.
Infact it is practically impossible to push when you are completely over it, that is a dash or kash vault. If your not touching before that then you are not doing a monkey, your just jumping and touching for no reason.
