I'll try and put together a little "how to" on the butterfly kick and butterfly 360 from the resources/ practise i have had, and hope it helps people with these moves =) let me know if they are of any use and i will do some more on other wushu type movements Eg lotus kick.
Butterfly Kick -
From the starting position (legs shoulder width apart) move your weight onto your right leg and place your arms at about shoulder height with your left arm in front and your right arm behind.
Change your weight onto your left knee whilst dipping your torso below your waste in a circular motion (try to keep upper body straight) Right and left arm perform a large consecutive circle. Follow your arms and allow your torso to rise whilst your right leg pushes up above head level, at the same time the left leg forcefully leaves the floor.
The left leg FOLLOWS the right leg in performing a large upward horizontal circle (they perform one circle each) above the head. After touching the floor the right leg (which lands first) bends at the knee to compensate for the force on it. Crucial points are execution of movements.
First the momentum of the arms, second the upper body movement and finish with the legs - right followed by the left. Head looks to the floor at inclined position. Toes are pointing outward.
Also the body itself does a 360 turn in th horizontal plane so you land facing the same way you jumped.
Pitfalls and mistakes of the butterfly kick:
1. Movements are not coordinated eg: legs move before torso
2. Upper body not horizontal when in air.
3. Legs swing below the level of the head.
4. In the beginning the left leg is not bent which results in insufficient height.
5. Absence of knee bending while landing can damage knee joint.
ps Thanks to wushu one family for the pic...
Hope this is of some help...
