errrm....kung fu might be another word for wushu, but not the other way around....lol
kung fu means - good skill ..well kind of, but is a word that westerners started to use in place of wushu..
wushu means "martial art" or military art...
therefore what the Shaolin monks practise is traditional wushu, though the way we mean it is to describe contempary sport wushu which is standardized and has a lot more acrobatics in it =)=)

This question was out of place everywhere and doesn't warrant a new thread ...
What's the kick with both feet called in the three-man Wushu video right around :30 seconds? I've been calling it a piston kick, but I made that up myself. I used it in a full-contact sparring match recently (with pads) to great effect, and now that people are asking me to teach them I don't want to spread the wrong name ...

general question about wushu: are there any throws, grappling techniques, locks... (the stuff jujitsu is full of) in wushu? or is it "just" about strikes and blocks and dodges and and and....

That is the odd thing about wushu as traditional wushu is what the Shaolin Monks practise, so in that respect yes there is grappling, throws and arm/wrist locks etc abundant. In my traditional school we practise them quite alot as they are practcal in the street. This can easily be seen if you were to watch a san shou fight.
As the Shaolin arts are heralded as the beginning of martial arts the throws in judo etc will have very probably evolved from these arts in some way, just liek karate.
Modern wushu as it is known doesshow the application of these moves in the forms. I have a few two/three man routines that demonstrate the power of throws/scissor kicks applied in wushu. I may try and get it up when the new site is up depending.
the thing that most people remember when they see modern wushu is the speed at which people move and the incredible height that they jump too...and unfortunately some people will neglect to practise the application enough - in our school to study wushu we MUST also study the traditional shaolin arts every week

good to know. ive never seen something labeled "wushu" that contained those "half distance" techs. I would love to see some though. I admire throws etc. there are marvelous techniques in judo, jujitsu and aikido - very "intelligent" techniques. Its a bit sad that the japanese culture has so much influence that everybody thinks that all the cool stuff is from japan. (though there are g.g.great masters to be found there) Exaple: who has ever heared of "wai chi"? i know some passionate GO players, but nobody sais he plays wai chi. but the japanese only play it since 18- something. (but again - they play it really well) maybe some of you dont know go as well. let me tell you that its a very beautyful game. The easiest rules you can think of but the game that is set up by those rules is just (its a bit like chess but older and... different, AND humans loose against computers in chess but not in wai chi (or baduk as the koreans call it))
