Rail springs are very easy. If you approach the rail and bounce just before it, lock your hands onto the rail and let your upper body move over it. As long as you commit 100% and have a good take off your legs will naturally follow you over and flip you up onto your feet.
Try and imagine simply rolling over the rail with your hands attached and your body should naturally follow through.
Hope that helps

WAIT!
they do take 100% commitment, i think more so than alot of the things i do - if you dont commit to it you could end up landing your spine on the rail and trust me you freakin dont want that - i did it and i was incredibly lucky- i couldnt walk for about 5 mins, and i got off lightly! it has potential to be very dangerous indeed.
dont worry though, im sure youll be fine as long as you follow spikes instructions and work your way up from something small ;D
last time i tried one of these i went all the way over but coming down i hit my knee on a nearby rail and ruined my elbow on the floor! not nice. i dont really like the trick myself - you feel like your floating over the ail and my body just feels heavy...ugh.

bounce, 2 footed. a one footed take off could throw you off balance and thats the last thing you want.

I agree, but only to begin with. Once you get it down taking off and landing one footed can really increase flow. Good luck m8

Is there any significant difference in technique between landing facing the rail and landing away from it, i.e. rail handspring versus rail roundoff/aerial?

only i guess depending on what you want to do next, if its a series of stuff then facing away, but if its a trick then i reckon the roundoff would look better...

I disagree, i don't think a round off could ever look better than a rail flip, but its each to their own. It's more about what you want to do with it than what others think because for every one person who like round offs, someone else will like the flip.

I was thinking more along the lines of roundoff over the rail to a backflip with a half-twist that would end facing you forward and running again ...

I would love to see that lol. But i still think the simple rail flip is my favourite option. I am always looking for the most flowing of movement and i think that would flow the most. Maybe into a nice high webster or something. Ooo i wana do that now, lol.
